How many of social media application do you have? How often do you use it? Social media are technology that facilitate to share information, ideas and other forms of expression via virtual communities with network access. But nowadays, many social media users easily believe in the news especially in the social media because irresponsible people use social media or we call “pranksters” distort the fact and share with the other social media users and they believe that news is true. That is what we call it “hoax”. So, we have to use social media wisely to avoid hoax, and its impact.
To avoid hoax, we must be more careful to use social media. Here are some tips. First be careful with your friend in social media because not only your friend in your school but also stranger can see your profile. Next, Think before you post. Sometimes intentionally or not our post can hurt someone. Then, Don’t trust every link you see. In social media especially facebook and Whatsapp there is a link that mentions important news, but if we investigate, there is a hoax inside the link, so be careful. Think before sharing. This is important because a lot of news in social media has not been proven to be true. And dont forget to keep your privacy safe in social media. First, dont fullfill all the personal information, for example about your parent’s name, phone number, address and your school. Dont share about your daily life because people can see your activity just by searching your name and it can endanger you. To prevent hoaxes is not difficult, just think before sharing. Open the official news page for example kompas.com, detik.com, etc. And most of social media users do not read the news. They just skim and scan that the problem. So we must read the news carefully to prevent the hoax inside the news. After we know how to use social media wisely and effectively of course we can spare from hoax, but if we cannot use social media wisely, we can get hoax.
If we addict to gadget especially in social media, of course we always get information from another friend. But, do you know the characteristic of hoaxes ? The first thing that you must know is the characteristic of hoax news. They are : title does not match with the content( for example : the topic is about president, but if we open is about food ); link is not trusted or not familiar ( for example : www.blablabla.xyz ) ; Usually at the end of the news the message in our social media mentions “ share with other people because this is important” or “ make it viral “. Distinguishing the hoax news from the real one is easy. First is that the hoax is only viral in social media but the real news is always at the headline news on television. Last, the hoax news title is different from the title on television or newspapers. And what should we do if we get hoax in our social media? Just tell to your groups or friends that the shared news is only the hoax and tell the real news. Many users of social media deceived by the news or something in their social media application still can not differentiate the hoax and believe that.
The impact of the hoaxes spread across social media, starting from the little impact to the big one. It might cause slander, and usually the creator of hoax make the opposite news of the fact, for example, there is news mentioning that our president drinks wine but in fact, our president only drinks apple juice. Because of that news the people hate the president. Next is share the wrong information. Usually the impact is about sale or giveaway from the brand product. For example, there is a poster mentioning that at X shoes store there is a promotion of buy 1 get 1 free only this day, but when we go to the store the sales said that the promo is not true. And the last is give a bad reputation for someone. For example at school, a student said that the teacher is doing wrong things because he hit my friend in the class, but in fact, the teacher just talked to her friend not hit her. We can conclude that using social media not only get the advantages, but also the impact if we do not use social media wisely. All the aplications in gadgets or smartphones are meant to be good, but it depends on the users themselves whether they use it well or not. And we as the educated users of social media have to use social media wisely and effectively to avoid hoaxes around us. We must be careful with the news around us because if we get the wrong news and trust it, we can give bad reputation for someone.
